Italian Haunts

This weekend, Dan and I decided to “lay low.” We were out of town last weekend, and next weekend I will be in Washington D.C., followed by another traveling weekend for a wedding in Indiana! Unfortunately, due to one of Dan’s classes, our Friday night was spoken for. He needed to review a play, so we made plans to head to a local theater to check out an original production called “The Butler Didn’t.” Because of Dan’s planning abilities and neurotic need to be early for everything, we arrived about an hour ahead of schedule. Luckily, the theater is right next door to one of our favorite joints, Peggy Kinnae’s! We were a little early for St. Patrick’s Day, but we ordrered a couple of Guinesses anyway.

After just one quick drink, it was on to the theater! Dan was very excited about the production:

His excitement didn’t last TOO long, because the play was not the best we’ve ever seen. I was particularly let down since when flipping through Twitter at intermission, I saw that Julie at PBFingers had scored tickets to Wicked! Talk about your play envy.

Afterward, besides being disappointed, we realized that we were also starving! We decided to reward ourselves for sitting through the whole play without booing by going to one of our favorite pizza places, Lou Malnati’s!

It definitely slipped my mind to take a picture of the pie once we got it home, but we knew just what we wanted – it’s called a “Lou” and comes with roasted tomato slices, spinach, mushrooms and of course, cheese. We got the deep dish (which I haven’t had in a VERY long time) and it was a very welcome treat. I certainly partook in a piece of it cold for breakfast the next morning as well.

Saturday was spent running errands, and for Dan … working! He had to go to a work event, and when he got home, he spent the rest of his day writing a paper for class. When he was finally finished, we decided that some more Italian food was just what we needed. I had been hearing great things about a joint called “Hole in the Wall.” It lived up to the hype it had been given.

Being that neither of us had eaten much that day, we gobbled up the chunks of bread they brought us with some olive oil and Parmesan cheese:

The menu was on a dry-erase board on the wall behind me, so when the waitress came over and Dan ordered bruchetta, I thought he was just guessing at an appetizer they might have. But no, his view was just better than mine! I’m glad he chose it, because it was some of the best I’ve ever had:

Our waitress also brought me a glass of one of my favorite wines, which I was very happy to see on the menu, the Santa Margherita Sauvignon Blanc. So delicious and crisp.

After some pondering, waffling and long discussions with the waitress, we decided upon our entrees. I chose a veal meatball dish, and Dan chose a pasta dish that was supposed to be pretty spicy. Mine was served in a sauce pan, which was maybe one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen:

The meatballs were gargantuan and extremely succulent. I don’t eat a ton of veal, but these were amazing. I even saved my second one to bring to my parents just because my mom loves veal so much and I knew she would appreciate the quality of this sauce and meat combination. I was right.

The owner of the establishment was circulating around the room, stopping at each of the 17 tables to ask how everyone’s meal was. When he got to ours, we spent some time chatting, and he decided to grace us with a special treat!

Hopefully you’re thinking what I was thinking when our waitress brought it over. I don’t think we even need to discuss how delicious this looks. It isn’t yet on the menu, so they wanted us to try it and let them know what we thought. It tasted even better than it looked, if you can believe that.

It is creamy vanilla gelato sandwiched between two light and flaky croissant-type “buns” and drizzled in chocolate with a strawberry garnish. Dan and I were fighting over who got to lick the plate.

I think our weekend of Italian indulgences was just what we needed.
