Getting Back on Track

Though I was previously a bit pessimistic about getting back in shape, starting to eat better and hopping back on the healthy living truck, I have made huge strides in the past few weeks in both action and attitude. Here are a few things I’ve been up to in that vein:

1. I strapped my BodyMedia back on.

A former client of mine, BodyMedia makes the most accurate wearable fitness technology available (note: they have since been purchased by Jawbone, so now those products are enjoying all the terrific brains that helped form BodyMedia). It allows me to enter everything I eat, set goals, track how many calories I burn, how many steps I take, etc. Warning: it can be mildly addictive to see all that data …

2. I’m making an effort to get moving.


Whether I’m fitting in a quick strength workout or using weekend time when Dan’s around to help with Ella to hop on the treadmill for a longer workout, I’m moving as much as possible. I am building up slowly, but using free weights (and a bit of Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred as well), long walks with the stroller, sprints on the treadmill and constant up and down the stairs in our house to make sure I get in my target calorie burn each day.

3. I’m going green.


I’ve started making a colossal effort to eat more veggies after losing sight of healthy eating during pregnancy. Exhibit A above and Exhibit B below. Current favorite mix-ins for salads or stir fry include: mustard greens, collard greens, okra, carrots (we bought one of those enormous bags at Costco and have been using them ever since), onions, snow peas, beets and mushrooms.


4. Water is my new best friend.

I make it a goal to fill up my Contigo water bottle at LEAST four times a day (more if I work out or it’s extremely hot out). Sometimes there are days when the little monster keeps me running around, which makes it a bit tougher to drink as much water (and get it out of my bladder later), but I do the best I can. I also drink decaf tea and kombucha to mix it up a bit but still consume liquids.

All my efforts are aided by the fact that it’s really starting to warm up in Charlotte (it’s supposed to be 70-80 degrees all this week), plus Ella is sleeping a bit more at night. I’m also motivated by my sister in law’s upcoming bachelorette party. I’d REALLY love to not have to buy new pants …
